Medical Presentation on Oculogyric Crisis
This video is a lecture by Kalu Onuma, MD on Oculogyric Crisis; given at the Quillen College of Medicine/East Tennessee State University. This is the first information I found in my search, that linked this malady to neuroleptic medication. The video is long but gives a very detailed explanation of how the brain is affected by anti-psychotic meds in some patients and what treatments effectively ended the an oculogyric crisis for them.
I found the lecture very enlightening, and it confirmed my suspicion that my son’s “staring upward” episodes may have been brought on by some of the medications he took for Schizophrenia (such as Risperidone, Abilify, Lexapro, Depakote and Trileptal).
